Former Vice President Pence Declines to Support Trump

Published 9 months ago

Former U.S Vice president Mike Pence, 64, has made it clear that he will not be supporting his former boss, Donald Trump, in the run-up to the upcoming American presidential elections.

Pence’s Tenure with Trump

Pence served as Vice President during Trump’s term from 2017 to 2021. After Trump lost the presidential elections to Joe Biden in November 2020, he urged Pence not to recognize the result. This demand came to a head shortly before the infamous Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, when Trump once again insisted that Pence should obstruct the certification of the election results. Despite this, Pence confirmed the outcome under his leadership. During the riot, Trump supporters called for Pence to be hanged, leading to a break in the previously loyal relationship between Pence and Trump.

Pence’s Political Aspirations

Pence tried to become a presidential candidate himself in the current campaign but withdrew from the race in October. Unlike many other Republican ex-candidates, Pence is not rallying behind Trump. He stated that it should come as no surprise that he will not be supporting Donald Trump this year. In his comments to Fox News, Pence suggested that Trump is squandering all the conservative values they fought for during their tenure in the White House. He also mentioned that he would not be supporting Biden either.

Upcoming Presidential Election

Both Trump and Biden have secured enough support this week to be put forward as candidates for their respective parties. They will face each other again in the presidential elections on November 5th. Pence’s refusal to back either candidate adds an interesting dynamic to the upcoming elections.
