WhatsApp is reportedly working on a feature known as ‘alternate profile’. This feature will allow users to display a different name and profile picture to strangers, according to WABetaInfo.

Enhanced Privacy, Better Control

At present, if users restrict the visibility of their name and profile photo, strangers cannot see anything. The new feature, however, will provide an option for users to display some information to non-contacts. For instance, they could choose to show only their first name with a different photo.

Potential Integration with Usernames

WABetaInfo suggests that the ‘alternate profile’ feature could particularly be useful if WhatsApp introduces a username system. This would make it possible for more non-contacts to see a user’s alternate profile.

Multiple Access Points

The alternate profile option can be found in two locations within the application. Users can access it when setting up their profile and when limiting the visibility of their profile photo.
