OpenAI Welcomes Sam Altman Back to Board and Appoints Three New Members

OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research lab, announced that its CEO, Sam Altman, has returned to the company’s Board of Directors. This comes about five months after Altman was dismissed and subsequently reappointed as the company’s CEO.

Notable New Board Members

Alongside Altman’s reinstatement, OpenAI has welcomed three new board members: Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman, and Fidji Simo.

Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, a non-profit leader and physician, serves on the Boards of Pfizer and the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. She has held directorial positions at Proctor and Gamble, Meta (Facebook), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute.

Nicole Seligman, a globally recognized corporate and civic leader and lawyer, sits on the corporate boards of Paramount Global, MeiraGTx Holdings PLC, and Intuitive Machines, Inc. Seligman previously held the position of EVP and General Counsel at Sony Corporation.

Fidji Simo, a veteran in the consumer technology industry with over 15 years of experience, currently operates as the CEO and Chair of the American delivery company Instacart. She also holds a position on the Board of Directors at Shopify. Simo was the Former Vice President and Head of the Facebook App, managing various key operations.

Board’s Role in OpenAI’s Future

The new board, comprised of individuals with global leadership experience in technology, nonprofit, and corporate governance, is set to work closely with the existing board members and senior management, according to OpenAI. Bret Taylor, Chair of the OpenAI board, commented that the board members’ collective experience and leadership will guide OpenAI’s growth and promote its mission in artificial general intelligence for the benefit of humanity.
