Republicans Nominate Mike Johnson for House Speaker Amidst Infighting

Published about 1 year ago

In a bid to unite their fractious majority and end ongoing chaos, Republicans have nominated Rep. Mike Johnson as their latest choice for House Speaker. This move came just hours after an earlier pick withdrew from contention due to opposition from former President Donald Trump.

Johnson, a representative from Louisiana, and a lower-ranked member of the House GOP leadership team, has become the fourth Republican nominee in a cycle marked by political infighting since Kevin McCarthy’s departure. This infighting has seen GOP factions vying for power and influence.

A Fractured GOP

Over the past three weeks, the Republicans have been struggling to maintain their majority status, leading to embarrassment and frustration among their ranks. The House is currently divided with far-right members refusing to accept a more traditional speaker and moderate conservatives opposing a hardliner.

While Johnson had no opponents during the private roll call, around two dozen Republicans abstained from voting, which could have jeopardized his nomination. Despite this, when the House convenes for a floor vote, Johnson will need almost all Republicans in the public roll call to secure the position.

Trump’s Influence and a New Leader

Former President Trump, who is the party’s front-runner for the 2024 presidential election, has been vocal about his influence on the speaker nomination process. Trump suggested that his “un-endorsement” impacted the bid of Rep. Tom Emmer, who withdrew his nomination.

The focus then shifted to Johnson, who was the second highest vote-getter on Tuesday morning’s internal ballots. Johnson, a lawyer specializing in constitutional issues, had previously rallied Republicans around Trump’s legal effort to overturn the 2020 election results.

If Johnson is elected as speaker, it would put two high-ranking GOP leaders from Louisiana in power, with Johnson above Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who was rejected by hardliners in his own bid as speaker.

The Search for Unity

In their quest to find a leader who can unite the factions and get the U.S. Congress working again, Republicans returned behind closed doors. The evening ballot saw Johnson winning 128 votes, more than any other candidate.

One proposal circulating was to reinstall McCarthy as speaker with hardline Rep. Jim Jordan in a new leadership role. However, many lawmakers believe it would not be successful.

With Republicans controlling the House 221-212 over Democrats, any GOP nominee can afford just a few detractors to win the gavel. As the speaker vote continues to be a contentious issue, it remains to be seen who will eventually secure the position and lead the party forward.
