President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, does not consider the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, as a terrorist organization. This contradicts the stance of countries such as the United States and the European Union, who have Hamas listed as a terrorist entity. According to Erdogan, Hamas is a “freedom group fighting to defend its land.”

Erdogan has consistently expressed his support for the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip and condemned Israeli policy in the region. Unlike most Western leaders who distinguish between the civilians and Hamas, Erdogan’s critique primarily targets Israeli violence and calls for an immediate ceasefire.

Criticism of Israeli Policy

“We have no problem with the Israeli state, but we do have issues with the Israeli policy against the Palestinians,” Erdogan told party members. He described Israel’s war in Gaza, which has seen extensive bombing and civilian casualties, as “inhumane.”

Erdogan also criticized the involvement of countries outside the Middle East, particularly Western nations, “who shed tears for Israel.” He accused these countries of fueling the fire and called it hypocritical for the West to condemn the war in Ukraine while remaining silent on the bloodshed in Gaza.

Advocacy for Independent Palestine

Erdogan called for the establishment of an independent Palestine and stated that Turkey is willing to vouch for such a state.

Response from Italy

Erdogan’s comments about Hamas were met with strong disapproval from Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who described the remarks as “disgusting.” Salvini mentioned he would discuss with the Minister of Internal Affairs whether it is necessary to summon the Turkish ambassador.
