Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, has expressed his views on the Israel-Hamas conflict, stating that a two-state solution to establish an independent Palestine is the “fundamental way out.” This marks his first public comment on the war since it erupted almost two weeks ago.

Ceasefire Top Priority

According to China’s state broadcaster CCTV, Xi highlighted the urgency for a ceasefire to prevent the conflict from escalating or spiraling out of control, potentially causing a severe humanitarian crisis. He made these comments during a meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly in Beijing.

China’s Willingness to Help

Xi expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with Egypt and Arab nations to promote a comprehensive, just, and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue. He lauded Egypt for its significant role in diffusing tensions and supporting China’s efforts to enable humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Egypt Agrees to Aid Gaza

Recently, Egypt consented to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza through the Rafah border crossing, a deal facilitated by US President Joe Biden and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. However, it remains unclear when the aid convoy will be permitted to enter Gaza.

World Powers Divided over Conflict

The Israel-Hamas conflict, triggered by a coordinated terror attack on Israel by Hamas that killed around 1,400 people, has laid bare the deepening divisions among world powers. Israel’s subsequent bombardment and siege of Gaza have resulted in the death of approximately 3,500 Palestinians, including hundreds of children, as reported by local health authorities.

China’s Stance on Conflict

China and Russia have called for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict and refrained from explicitly condemning Hamas, contrasting sharply with the outpouring of support for Israel from the US and European leaders. Beijing’s refusal to condemn Hamas has elicited discontent from Israel and criticism from US officials. Despite this, China has attempted to position itself as a neutral mediator in the conflict.

China’s Economic Interests

China’s economic interests in both Russia and the Middle East, specifically the importation of oil and gas, are substantial and it aims to protect them at all costs. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has accused Israel of exceeding the bounds of self-defense. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has announced the deployment of Middle East Envoy Zhai Jun to promote peace talks and push for a ceasefire in the region.
