UNRWA Predicts Shutdown Without Funding

Published 11 months ago

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) anticipates a halt in operations by the end of February if international funding remains suspended. The potential shutdown would not only affect operations in the Gaza Strip but also other areas where the humanitarian organisation is active, according to Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA.

Funding Suspended After Accusations

The flow of funding from many countries ceased this week after Israel accused UNRWA staff of supporting Hamas. Some employees were alleged to have aided in the large-scale attack on Israel on October 7. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that UNRWA had been “completely infiltrated” by Hamas members. In response, UNRWA dismissed the accused staff members and initiated an investigation.

UNRWA’s Critical Role

UNRWA plays a significant role in providing humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where almost the entire population has been displaced since the outbreak of war. High-ranking United Nations officials underscore the essential need for the organization, especially during the current crisis.

Israel’s Stance on UNRWA

Despite strong accusations, the Israeli government is not immediately looking to sever ties with UNRWA. The Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the government agency managing daily affairs in the territories, stated it sees no immediate alternative to UNRWA. However, Israeli officials have indicated that they do not foresee a role for the UN agency after the war against Hamas concludes.
