Greta Thunberg Criticized in Germany for Pro-Palestinian Stance

Published about 1 year ago

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has been sharply criticized in Germany for her pro-Palestinian stance at a climate march in Amsterdam. The criticism was particularly strong from the left-wing environmental party, The Greens. The party distanced itself from what it referred to as Thunberg’s “depressing and absolutely indecent statements.”

Thunberg Accused of Misusing the Climate Platform

According to Ricarda Lang, a leading figure in the governing party, Thunberg is misusing the absolutely necessary concern about climate protection for a unilateral position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Lang suggested that Thunberg neither named the perpetrators nor condemned the absolute atrocities of Hamas, discrediting herself as the face of the climate movement. German newspaper Bild described Lang’s comments as a tough reckoning with the “anti-Jewish Swede.”

Thunberg’s Future as a Climate Activist Questioned

Thunberg’s statements in Amsterdam signify the end of her as a climate activist, according to Volker Becker, the chairman of the German-Israeli Association (DIG). Becker suggested that Thunberg’s main role has now become an “Israel-hater.” The Israeli embassy in Germany expressed disappointment, stating that it’s unfortunate that Thunberg is once again misusing the climate platform for her own purposes.
